The process for making the Award each year is that european science journalism/writing associations are asked to put forward their nomination for the Award (one nominee per association). It is entirely up to your association to determine the most appropriate way to select your nominee.

Here at the ABSW we are asking our members for their nominations with the ABSW’s Executive Board then selecting the winner to be put forward to the European Award. Entries from each national association will then be judged by a european judging panel.

The nominated writer must have been working in the country of the nominating national European association during the relevant competition year, 1 January 2015 – 31 December 2015. Supporting articles provided with the nomination must have all been first published during the competition year 1 January 2015 – 31 December 2015.

The winner of the European Science Writer of the Year Award will receive a cash prize of £500.00 and will be invited to attend the 3rd European Conference of Science Journalists and ABSW Science Writers Awards ceremony to be held in Manchester, UK, Saturday 23 July 2016. Funds are available to cover the costs of attending the conference and ceremony.

We look forward to receiving your nominations.

Stipendier till Heidelberg Laureate Forum 18–23 september 2016

Travel grants available: Engage with the world’s brightest mathematicians and computer scientists in Heidelberg!

Foundation awards 15 travel grants to journalists to cover the 4th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF)

This September, recipients of the ACM A.M. Turing Award, the Fields Medal, the Nevanlinna Prize and the Abel Prize gather in Heidelberg to meet with 200 young researchers from all over the world at the 4th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF). Recognizing the importance of a vital communication network, the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation will provide 15 travel grants for journalists to cover the Forum and connect with the preeminent scientists of mathematics and computer science. The 4th HLF will take place from September 18-23, 2016, and applications for the coveted travel grants are accepted until May 15, 2016.

The HLF offers a carefully selected group of young researchers in mathematics and computer science the extraordinary chance to meet the preeminent scientists in their fields for one week of cross-generational, scientific dialogue. What distinguishes the HLF from standard scientific conferences is the unique informal atmosphere that inspires a blend of acute scientific discussions and social interactions among the participants. Lectures, workshops and panel discussions embolden scientifically driven debate, while various social events encourage the participants to pursue their discourse outside the lecture halls and to get to know each other. Embedded once again into the program is the “hot topic” session, which is especially interesting for the media. At the 3rd HLF in 2015, the focus was on the social and ethical challenges of Big Data, viewed through the lens of computer science. The “hot topic’s” theme for the 4th HLF in 2016 will be announced soon.

The Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation offers 15 travel grants of up to 3,000 euros to enable journalists to report on this compelling networking event for the pinnacle in computer science and mathematics. Grants cover the travel costs as well as board and accommodation during the stay in Heidelberg (starting with a media get-together on the evening of September 17).

Until May 15, 2016, journalists from all over the world are invited to apply, irrespective of their media affiliation (print, TV, online, radio). The applications must include the following: a short CV, three samples of work (indicating respective medium), a synopsis of publications to date (indicating respective medium), planned contributions regarding the HLF as well as a preliminary travel itinerary including estimated costs.

Please send your travel grant applications to: media@heidelberg-laureate-forum.org

Application deadline: May 15, 2016

All journalists who wish to cover the 4th HLF are requested to register using the following link: (regardless of whether or not they will apply for a travel grant)

Background

The Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation (HLFF) annually organizes the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), which is a networking event for mathematicians and computer scientists from all over the world. The 4th Heidelberg Laureate Forum will take place from September 18-23, 2016. The HLF was initiated by the German foundation Klaus Tschira Stiftung (KTS), which promotes natural sciences, mathematics and computer science, and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS). The Forum is organized by the HLFF along with the KTS and HITS. It is strongly supported by the award-granting institutions, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM: ACM A.M. Turing Award), the International Mathematical Union (IMU: Fields Medal, Nevanlinna Prize), and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (DNVA: Abel Prize).

Inbjudan till seminarium om ”Antimicrobial Resistance” i Bryssel 16-17 november

The Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (SANTE) of the European Commission and the European Journalism Centre (EJC) invite 30 expert journalists in the field of health to the seminar ”Antimicrobial Resistance” in Brussels on 16-17 November, which will coincide with the EU launch of the European Antibiotics Awareness Day.

The organisers will cover flight, accommodation and most meals.

Anti-microbial resistance (AMR) is an important global economic and a societal challenge, of a scale and complexity comparable to climate change, which cannot be tackled by countries or public administrations alone: it requires a strong partnership where the EU needs to play a decisive role.

Antibiotics have dramatically reduced the number of deaths from infectious diseases during the 70 years since their introduction. However, through overuse and misuse, many micro-organisms have become resistant to them. In the first decade of this millennium alone global consumption of antibiotics in human medicine rose by nearly 40%. Today, there are 25.000 deaths attributable to AMR every year in the EU, with an estimated cost of EUR 1.5 billion due to loss of productivity and increased healthcare costs.

Unless stringent action is taken, the consequences for human health could be devastating: Many current medical practices such as organ transplants, chemotherapy and most forms of surgery will be a thing of the past. It is estimated that 10 million lives will be lost every year by 2050, more than the number of people currently dying from cancer annually, with a cumulative cost of 100 trillion USD, more than 1.5 times world GDP today. The effect on the sustainability of the health systems would be disastrous.

This workshop will feature panel discussions as well as on and off the record talks with senior representatives of the European Commission and other international organisations and agencies.

Journalists will also have the possibility to exchange views with Health and Food Safety Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis on the Commission’s priorities in the area of health.

This event is exclusively catered for specialist and expert journalists in the field of health.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Elise Rochez as soon as possible at rochez@ejc.net, inserting a few lines on your motivation and, if possible, including links to articles you may have written on the subject. We will inform you shortly thereafter if your invitation is confirmed.

For further information register online on www.ejcseminars.eu

The organisers will cover flight, accommodation and most meals.
